One big difference between this new version of campmyrtlewood.org and the old static site is this "Camper login" thing you see now in the left sidebar. "What's that about?", you might well wonder.

Having a login means we can allow campers to participate here in ways that are otherwise not practical or even safe. When you create an account, you'll be able to create new forum topics, add your own photos to our photo galleries, create polls, view the profiles of other member campers, and participate in various other ways as the site evolves and develops. Without this login threshold, the site would be wide open to spammers who could post inappropriate and unwanted material. Depending on our experience here with spammer issues in the future, we may find it necessary to further restrict the participation options of site visitors who do not login, but we prefer to leave it more open if we can.

At present, all we require to create an account is a name, an email address, and a password of your choosing. We're not asking too much, are we? It may develop that we'll require you to respond to an email sent to the email address you supply to verify that it is indeed your own valid address, but again, we'll skip that step unless it proves necessary.

In any event, we will never share any information you provide us with any other entity beyond Camp Myrtlewood Inc. Practically speaking, that means such information will not exist anywhere except for within this website's secure database.

We've also invested in a SSL Certificate, so that your most sensitive communications with the website will be encrypted once you are logged in. You'll see that the URL will begin with "https://" when your communications are encrypted, for example when you are viewing a Camper profile, including your own.

Enhancing Camp Myrtlewood communities

I'm very interested in how everyone feels about the login policy and related issues. More than anything, I want everyone here to feel welcome, and to feel that you have a say in how this site evolves. My hope is that it will support and enhance the various Camp Myrtlewood communities that already exist in the "real world".

I know from long personal experience that there can be a real synergy in the combination of online and offline conversations and information exchange.

The core of the Camp Myrtlewood experience is overwhelmingly the direct physical and spiritual impact of being there in body and mind. We may find that using this site will enhance our ability to be there in mind even when we can't be there in body, or that it will allow us to prepare more effectively for when we are able to be there bodily.

What say you?

I couldn't agree more...I

I couldn't agree more...I think its a fabulous idea...the COB Facebook web site for folks to have open discussion is primarily aimed at youth...this is a site that for those of us no longer affiliated with a local COB to still stay connected with our roots...nice job!

Thanks!

Thanks very much. It's a pretty empty place as yet, but this new version of the site, which allows people to interact here for the first time, has only been up for a few days; we went live June 11th. My theory is that once people like yourself start to speak up and post, others will be more inclined to join in, so thanks so  much for being brave!
