Family Camp 2011 -- Save the Date
Celebrating 75 years of Family Camp!
Tuesday, July 19, to Sunday, July 24
Theme: When Disaster Strikes
Seventy-five years ago our Brethren relatives and friends had a vision of a lovely green space that allowed for growth, transformation, building community, and inspiration. Camp Myrtlewood has offered that possibility to thousands of children and campers since then. If you've never been to Camp Myrtlewood, you're in for a treat of tall trees, running water and cool swimming hole, excellent food, rampant ferns and newts. If you have been to Myrtlewood, you're in for the same treat, and you know it. Celebrate the 75th anniversary of a long ministry of hospitality at Camp. Look forward to some historically memorable treats; what says summer more than pork barbecue, softball, and a day at the beach. Join us for a week of learning, loving, sharing, and remembering.
Anniversaries allow us to look at both our past and our future. No matter the outcome of our daily struggles, God is present, and we can learn to be strength for each other. Frank and Jennie Ramirez will shepherd our insights that will help us weather life "when disaster strikes," both personal and more widespread. What stories do we have to tell about our brushes with disaster? What does it tell us about God, our relationship with the divine, with each other? How does it shape our subsequent life? Plus, Brethren have a long history of responding to disaster; it's one of the ministries in which we tend to shine. Please bring along some Church World Service disaster kit materials.
Our daily schedule will include optional guided meditation to start the day, along with morning workshops for all ages. Afternoons will offer quiet time, further "disastrous" activities, and swimming. Each evening will close with a campfire for sharing songs, stories of disasters faced, skits, and more.
Tweet your friends, spread the word and we'll see you at family camp July 19-24th at Camp Myrtlewood, Bridge, Oregon! We're looking forward celebrating with you.
Are you prepared for a disaster? And can you help others prepare?
Church World Service challenges us to help others in times of need. During family came we plan on making some disaster kits to send to New Windsor.
Coordinate the list between your friends that you know are coming to camp and let's get lots of kits made up.
Kits include:
- One five-gallon bucket with resealable lid
- Five scouring pads
- Seven sponges, assorted sizes
- One scrub brush
- Eighteen cleaning towels (reusable, like Easy Wipes(r))
- One 50-78 oz. box dry laundry detergent
- One 12 oz. bottle of liquid concentrated household cleaner (like Lysol(r))
- One 25 oz. bottle liquid disinfectant dish soap (like Dawn(r))
- One package of 48-50 clothespins
- Clothesline, two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.
- Five dust masks
- Two pairs latex gloves (like Playtex(r))
- One pair work gloves
- 28-bag roll of heavy-duty trash bags (30-45 gallon)
- One 6-9 oz. bottle of insect repellent (pump, drops or lotion, not aerosol)

Family Camp 2010
Camp hosts a great variety of groups, from home-schooled kids to weavers to youth work camps, to church groups, to men's and women's retreats to family reunions. Among these is a tradition that has grown from Camp Myrtlewood's birth:
Brethren Family Camp is a regular feature, usually held Tuesday through Sunday worship around the third week in July. Favorite activities have included intergenerational campfires with music-making and story-telling, hiking, swimming, folk dances, sports, art, and a salmon bake. It often includes a Beach Day on the Oregon Coast or other trips to nearby attractions.
Family Camp 2010 -- Save the Date
Tuesday, July 20, to Sunday, July 25
Our theme this year is Ancient Wisdom: Earth, Fire, Water, Wind. We will focus on the ancient elements as a framework for our time together, and will have opportunities to learn about, share in, reflect upon, create, and celebrate the wisdom of various cultures, practices, theologies ... and in creation itself.
Mornings will begin with "quiet wisdom" opportunities. Some optional sessions include It's Amazing (activities for children) with Esther Gregory and Ivan Bowman; Pocket Parables (Ben Green), Contemplative Photography (Ivan Bowman and Ben), A cake baked on a hot stone with Carol Bowman, ( Bruce Follensbee), Families & Aging: Dilemmas and Decision, an interactive game (Sally Bowman), The Spirit that was here before the spirit we know (Steve Gregory), art and varied self-guided discovery experiences. Be sure to be part of the elemental games and the Critter Parade on Saturday! Campfires and worship will be coordinated by Carol Bowman and will include time for kids' sharing, music, storytelling and reflection. Mike Titus (Sunnyslope Church pastor) will share at campfires and on Sunday morning.
Family Camp 2010 is being planned by the Bowman clan, their in-laws, and many friends. There's much more info to come, so check the website again at a later date for more complete details.
